Big Love Sculpture
  1. To create an overall plan for the sculpture, the entire class put their ideas together.  For example, me and a couple other students had the idea of having a man pillar make up the fountain, as apposed to a wall or arch.  Our idea was selected to be in the main design and it was fun to see our idea transform from a thought to the actual sculpture.
  2. Overall, A stage-piece doesn't have to be completely perfect in the sense that every square millimeter doesn't have to be uniform.  Because the audience is further away, the props can be painted a main color, the covered with different blotches of colors.  The different colors then blend together and make the stone tiles look weathered.  I was most engaged when my group was working on making the overall base.  It was fun to use tools to make something bigger than the boxes from the last project.
  3. Overall, the meeting a the beginning of the project was successful because everyone was able to give ideas for the main project.  People could give ideas, modify other ideas, or do both.  Everybody participated and entire class worked well together.
  4. I was really happy because I was able to pick my group.  I chose to be in the group that made the base because I wanted to do mostly woodworking.  I was happy that I learned how to use some new power tools.
  5. The overall base is the most successful part of my groups work.  We made it sturdy so it can hold the weight of a couple of people.  However, the most successful looking element that my group participated in was the tiles.  The tiles look really convincing from a distance through our painting technique.  We mixed different shades to make the stone look weathered.
  6. My group was constantly giving itself feedback along the way.  We were always changing elements of the base to make it as successful as possible.  I think the sculpture as a whole looks great, especially for the short time period.

Final Reflection

  1. Overall, my two most successful works were sculpture works.  I was able to expand my creativity when I was able to use my knowledge of different materials and tools. My two best sculpture projects were the collage and the humanoid figure.
  2. These were my most successful projects because I was able to expand my creativity with my knowledge of the materials and tools. This allowed me to experiment more with my art so I had the most successful pieces of work.
  3.  My least successful pieces of art were my Ipod paintings. Because the expirement was to change the colors in the paintings, They ended up looking bad because the colors did not agree with one another, making the paintings look extremely unrealistic.  Knowing this, I would have chosen a different object to photograph.
  4. My greatest strength in art is my ability to quickly learn how a tool or material works so I can then start expirementing with it.  This leads me to make my most successful works.  Sculpture is usually better for me because there are more tools to work with, also leading me to have more fun.
  5. During some projects I showed more intrest than others.  For example, If we had been doing a project for two weeks, like the Ipod paintings, I would loose intrest and my effort would start going down.  However, my effort was always maxed out if we were working on something that had a new sort of medium because I was always intrested in learning about how some new material or tool works.
  6. I am excited to go into sculpture next year because, even though I enjoyed this class, I am happy to only do sculpture works and not drawing or painting.
  7. Learning to use new tools helps in the real world with learning new things in classes.  I think this is a good model for learning an I will try to apply it to school.

Landscape

Landscape
Overall, this was an interesting project.  I liked how we were able to work in the darkroom with different tints and shades and then be able to go outside and work on line quality and structure with ink.  This variety made this project better than others as we were also able to develop our own photos.  I tried to focus on trees with the ink drawings.  Trees have are unique because every tree has different line qualities that can be translated into an ink pen or brush.  With the darkroom shots I was disappointed because my camera was broken so I could pick from 4 shots that developed properly.  I tried to focus on overall landscape with these.  I was interested in getting the treelines and to see how the ground molded and flowed.

Figure Reflection

Sculpture Reflection

  1. I wasn't really thinking of "metamorphosis" during my project.  I was thinking more on how the the project had to be abstract but still be humanoid.
  2. By doing this project, I pushed myself to understand plaster more.  I realized that the consistency of the plaster has a big effect on how some tools work.  The higher the concentration, the more force is needed cut the plaster.
  3. Over the course of the project, my intentions changed from making a more humanoid sculpture to make an abstract figure that looked slightly humanoid.  This came after realizing how much more an abstract sculpture stretches the brain as a apposed to an obvious human sculpture.
  4. Overall, I was happy with how I used the plaster because It was effective and efficient.  I wouldn't change my approach.

In Process Reflection
Overall, I want people to see this sculpture and to be able to see a human figure but not perfectly clearly.  This pose is the usain bolt and I want the viewers to see that. I have already focused on its 3D aspect in that it is not the same thickness the whole way down, as well as I have been working on the round shape.  Now I just need to smooth it out.

Today we plastered our molds to sculpt.  We had to use the right proportion of 1.5:1 plaster to water ratio for the right consistency.  Although it was a messy process, It will be the most affective material to use to chip away to at our sculptures.

 Reflection Questions

Although an abstract figure, my drawings successfully capture the gesture of the figure in that it shows all of the motion while still only looking semi-humanoid.

To simplify the drawing and sculpture, I try to get rid of almost any sharp edges by smoothing them out.  I am also abstracting the sculpture by doing so.

After realizing that my sculpture needed to be more abstract, I shifted it down to get rid of the legs to help make it less humanoid.

I visualize my sculpture in my container because if I follow my clay model, I is about the same width, height, and length.  I just might need to do extra  chipping away.

Value Project

 Reflection Questions

  1. In my previous post, I talked about my issue of scale.  By continuing to engage with my drawing, I was able to experiment with different line placements in order to fix the problem I had  with scale.
  2. I have further pushed my knowledge by understanding how different line qualities make an object appear either more forward or back in my drawing.  I have also pushed my understanding of shadow by continuing to experiment until I am content.
  3. I felt more comfortable drawing than in the dark room because I had more control over each individual line.
  4. The drawing also gave me more "expression" because I was able to control every line as apposed to just using the pictures that I had already taken.
  5. I would suggest spending less time in the dark room because four prints only takes about 2-3 days.  I felt like I could have made better use of my time if it wasn't spent in the dark room longer than needed.

Value Project Photos

Value Project Photos

  1. With this photo assignment, I developed my craft by becoming more familiar with my resources. Instead of using the same settings for each photo, I adjust the aperture, time, and tint on the enlarger to experiment and eventually find out what settings are the best for each individual print.
  2. So far, I have used an enlarger, a camera, a light, chisels, a block of wood, developer, photo paper, china pencils, and film.
  3. My main problem for this project is knowing how long to leave the photos in the developer and the other liquids.  Some of my prints have been in there too short and are not completely developed.
  4. I will ask my peers about the time they put their prints in the developer for.

Value Project Drawing

Shading Drawing

  1. So far, I have developed my craft with a pencil with my use of shading.  I hae discovered how to vary my shading techniques, so instead of shading the whole drawing with one style, I can vary my style for different objects.
  2. For this drawing, I am using 4 different pencils, and eraser for blending, as well as paper, a board to draw on, and a light to amplify the shadows.
  3. So far, the only problem for me is my perspective.  A lot of my lines are not how I see them.
  4. To solve these, I am going back and correcting all the lines that appear differently on my paper

Texture Sculpture

Texture Unit Sculpture

  1. The variance of textures is pretty big in my piece. Even though there is a lot of Wood, it is split up by the bike tire in the middle.
  2. At the beginning, I really wanted a uniform piece.  After a couple days, I decided that I only wanted part of the piece to be uniform and the other side to be chaotic.
  3. Overall, my understanding of abstract has gotten bigger as now I appreciate the 3 dimensionality of works.
  4. Throughout my project, I was constantly changing my idea of how I want it to look.  Each component went through multiple stages.
  5. I was constantly reforming my components.  At the end I added screws to the wood because I thought the color of the screws would nicely contrast the wood.
  6. My print and sculpture are not very similar as I only used my print as a springboard for my sculpture.
  7. Instead of just trying to make what I thought looked cool, I now try to make art pieces that work together.  I think about contrast and depth as apposed to just color.
  8. Overall, my works could have benefited from a little more control.  Instead of being so random with how I placed my wood chips, I could have been more thoughtful with my placement.
  9. I was happy with how I participated in saying my views about my artwork and others.
  10. I was able to communicate my insight well.  Instead of just pointing out cool colors or shapes, I really tried to point out contrast and depth.
